The film encourages viewers to choose knowledge over ignorance while getting to know those who may be different from them, so that the challenges of marginalized communities can be effectively addressed. As a Jewish American who was a child during WWII, director Nancy Cooperstein Charney was inspired to make this film by the poem ascribed to the Lutheran pastor, Martin Niemöller, "First they came for the socialists, and I didn't speak out because I was not a socialist, then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out because I was not a trade unionist, then they came for the jews and I did not speak out because I was not a jew - then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak up for me."
